Description

The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere is a church of Rome, the largest in the Trastevere district.
Established since the third century by Pope Callistus I, the church was renovated during the reign of Pope Innocent II (1130 - 1143).
the facade, which preserves a mosaic at the top of the thirteenth century, is preceded by a portico designed by Carlo Fontana (1702).
Inside, three aisles of columns (based in Santa Maria Maggiore), you notice the beautiful wooden ceiling, designed by Domenichino (also author of the Assumption in the center) and some paintings dating from the restoration of the nineteenth century, during the papacy of Pius IX.
in the first chapel on the right is of James S. Francesca Romana Zoboli while in the second chapel of the Nativity Etienne Parrocel.
in the basin of the apse you can admire a mosaic of the Coronation of the Virgin (twelfth century) , adorned at the bottom, from Stories of the Virgin Mary, always a mosaic by Pietro Cavallini (1291).
the first chapel on the left is the chapel of Avila, with baroque stucco work by Antonio Gherardi (1680). Between the fourth and third chapel there is the tomb of Innocent II, designed by architect Vespignani that between 1866 and 1877 performed a stylistic restoration of the church. In the third chapel lunettes, and sofitto altarpiece Ferrau Tenzone.
Among other works of art marks the icon of Our Lady of Mercy or Mary Theotokos, precious specimen probably dates back to the sixth century (but some historians assume VIII), the rigid frontal and brilliant colors correlate with the first layer of frescoes of Santa Maria Antiqua.
Altemps the chapel dates from the late sixteenth century.
